At Hua Long, we are true believers in the power of kung fu training. Our program endeavors to integrate the core traditions of kung fu with the needs of modern American culture in a progressive, upbeat and positive way. On this page, “About Us,” we will discuss the value you can expect from our program, and what we ask for in return. Other topics are addressed in our “FAQ,” which you can access by clicking on the menu to your right.

Often we have discussions after class. One of the more popular topics is, “Why are we here?”

Folks have many different reasons for pursuing martial arts, and our program is a unique kung fu school in a few ways, and similar to others many ways. We’ve found that understanding why we’re interested in taking martial arts in general and kung fu in particular goes a long way towards clarifying which style or program is best for an individual. Thus, “About Us” is really “About You.”

Our sifu, or “teacher,” has been training in our style of kung fu for over 14 years. He doesn't take any financial profit from the program, and is paid only $10 per class by our host club (See the “Meridian” page). This fee is put back into the class and used for equipment, class events, this site…etc. So the first value we offer our members is honesty. We don’t do this for the money, so you can expect us to shoot straight with you regarding your training and participation in our program. We do it for the love of kung fu and nothing else.

We offer folks the value of a solid foundation in kung fu and the building blocks for strength, coordination, balance, tranquility, confidence and energy. Of course, all a school can do is show you the path…you must take your own journey.

Unlike many purpose-built self-defense programs, our kung fu style takes patience, commitment and practice to learn and perform effectively. Only through hard work and effort do our members feel a sense of competence and accomplishment; however, we do our best make the process fun, upbeat, and inspirational.

Our system of kung fu was brought to the United States from Hong Kong n the 1930’s by Chin Li, and practiced ever since. We are not a well-known style, nor a popular flavor-of-the month martial art – but what we practice is a time-tested system of health, self-defense, and power in with a small school hometown feel. The name “Hua Long” means “Transformed Dragon,” which symbolizes the changes our members can experience in our program.

Our membership is dedicated, courteous, insightful and supportive men and women. We promote our school to adults over 18 because we feel there are ample program options available in Los Angeles for kids, but not too many kung fu programs are geared towards adults who must deal with the stresses of the workaday world. We offer the value of a sanctuary from the material angst of everyday life; a zone of transformation that will give you the space to become the person you want to be – whether that’s a more confident person, a fitter person, a happier person, a more energetic person or a more secure person.

No healthy partnership is a one-way street. Since we don’t balance our relationship with our students financially, we ask that they provide another kind of value in return. We are energized and inspired by hard work, persistence, focus and enthusiasm, which is how the school/student dynamic provides mutual value and growth.

Once committed to our program, we ask members to attend class at least once a week, and work hard, stay attentive and be respectful. We ask that members wear all black, or dress in a traditional kung fu uniform, and that they bow when entering or exiting the room. If someone has prior training, they have our full respect for it. However, our style is different and we ask that all members begin at the beginning.

We don’t judge people or place them in competition with each other. Rather, we try to motivate everyone to do their best – which is all anyone can ask. We’ve found that by keeping the classes fast-paced, athletic and fun, we’ve fostered a happy, friendly and enthusiastic group.
